Lives made better by Japanese donor
Six water tanks means six families’ lives are changed for the better thanks to a generous donation from the Asia-Pacific Ladies Friendship Society of Japan and Samoa Embassy staff.
The request came from Women in Business Development to supply water tanks for six families involved in its fine mat weaving project. The society also provided equipment for the organisation’s fetau income project.
Women in Business Development executive director Adimaimalaga Tafunai said the organisation was extremely grateful to Asia-Pacific Ladies Friendship Society and Samoa Embassy staff for donations of water tanks and equipment.
“Overall the six water tanks and fittings will be directly benefitting more than 50 women, men and children, who previously had no immediate water access. And the pressing equipment will help those farmers involved in the projects.”
For fine mat weaver Talalelei Oreni from the village of Fagasa in northwest Savaii, her family used to walk 20 minutes to fetch water in buckets and canisters from the village water tank.
“The only problem I faced every single day in my family was the water,” says Talalelei. “Getting water ate most of my time, and my children too, because as soon as they came home from school they would have to go and get water before it gets dark.”
The family last year extended their home and a water tank was their next savings target. “This is one of my goals, to get a tank for my family but now I got it for free through the help of these good people and Women in Business Development.”
Water tanks were also given to families of Naomi Paleni from Auala, Tiva Eteuati from Tufatafoe, and Seula Lafaele, Eveliga Kalolo and Leone Farani from Sataua.
The fetau pressing equipment is still being trialled at Women in Business Development before they are distributed.
